Feng Shui Eight Mansions Chart
Enter a Gregorian birth date and gender for the life trigram, its Luoshu number and element, the East or West group, and the eight touring stars with their palaces.
AI read-out
After the chart is cast, the result page has an "AI read-out" with a ready-made prompt for the Eight Mansions chart: the life trigram, four auspicious and four inauspicious directions, and the nine-palace wandering stars. Copy the full text and paste it into the LLM platform you usually use, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or DeepSeek.
Inputs and result
This eight mansions feng shui calculator takes two inputs: a Gregorian birth date and gender. The birth year turns at the Start of Spring rather than at the lunar new year, the same boundary the BaZi year pillar follows, so a date before the term charts on the previous year. The result gives the life trigram with its name, Luoshu number and element, whether it belongs to the East or West group, the four directions of its own group as favorable and the other four as unfavorable with the touring star each carries, and a nine-palace direction grid.
Mnemonic and examples
One mnemonic does the work. Add the four digits of the birth year until a single digit remains: 1985 gives 1 plus 9 plus 8 plus 5 for 23, then 2 plus 3 for 5, so the year counts as 5. A male chart takes 11 minus that digit, a female chart takes it plus 4; a result above 9 has 9 subtracted, and a result of 5 becomes Kun 2 for a male chart or Gen 8 for a female chart. The 1985 male chart is 11 minus 5, which is Qian 6.
Year by year
That single digit rises by one each year, so the male number falls by one and the female number rises by one, one palace at a time. The 1985 male chart is Qian 6, the 1986 male chart reaches 5 and rests on Kun 2, and the 1987 male chart is Xun 4. Male and female charts born in one year match only in a year whose digit is 8: 11 minus 8 is 3, and 8 plus 4 is 12, which becomes 3 again once 9 is subtracted. 1997 is such a year, and both charts read Zhen 3.
East-West groups and grid
The grouping follows the Later-Heaven palace: Kan 1, Zhen 3, Xun 4 and Li 9 form the East group, and Qian 6, Kun 2, Gen 8 and Dui 7 form the West group. The four directions of the same group are the favorable four, so every East group chart reads North, East, Southeast and South, and every West group chart reads Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest. The grid on the result page runs south at the top and east on the left, the old orientation, with the life trigram itself in the center cell, the eight palaces on their Luoshu positions, and each palace marked with the star it receives.
Touring stars and related tools
Those stars come from the touring-star verse run on the life trigram. Fu Wei always sits in the life trigram's own palace, and the other seven palaces take one star each in the Earlier-Heaven round of Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun and Dui. The same-group four take Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian and Fu Wei and the opposite four take Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha and Huo Hai, so a Qian 6 chart puts Liu Sha on Kan, Tian Yi on Gen, Wu Gui on Zhen, Huo Hai on Xun, Jue Ming on Li, Yan Nian on Kun and Sheng Qi on Dui. What each star governs, and how the eight are placed against doors and beds, is not on this page. Beyond direction, the facing degrees of the twenty-four mountains are on the Twenty-Four Mountains Luopan Calculator page, the twenty-year cycle on the Feng Shui Nine Periods Lookup page, the star flying into a palace for a year or month on the Feng Shui Purple-White Stars Chart page, and the five-element pattern of a birth moment on the BaZi Chart page. What this page gives is a grouping, its direction reading and the eight touring stars, not a reading of health, money or family.
East group and West group directions
The life trigram falls on one of the eight palaces by its Luoshu number: Kan 1, Zhen 3, Xun 4 and Li 9 form the East group, and Qian 6, Kun 2, Gen 8 and Dui 7 form the West group. The four directions of the same group are the favorable four. Trigram, Luoshu number, direction and element are listed below.
| Trigram | Luoshu number | Direction | Element | Group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kan | 1 | North | Water | East group |
| Kun | 2 | Southwest | Earth | West group |
| Zhen | 3 | East | Wood | East group |
| Xun | 4 | Southeast | Wood | East group |
| Qian | 6 | Northwest | Metal | West group |
| Dui | 7 | West | Metal | West group |
| Gen | 8 | Northeast | Earth | West group |
| Li | 9 | South | Fire | East group |
FAQ
How is the life trigram calculated?
One mnemonic: add the four digits of the birth year down to a single digit, then take 11 minus it for a male chart or the digit plus 4 for a female chart. A result above 9 has 9 subtracted, and a result of 5 becomes Kun 2 for a male chart or Gen 8 for a female chart. The year turns at the Start of Spring, not at the lunar new year.
What does the Start of Spring boundary change?
Two birthdays inside one calendar year can fall on two trigrams. Start of Spring 2000 falls on 4 February, so 30 January 2000 still charts on 1999 (its digit is 1; a male chart takes 11 minus 1 for 10, then minus 9 for Kan 1) while 5 February 2000 charts on 2000 (digit 2, a male chart reading Li 9). For a borderline birthday the result page prints the ganzhi year beside the year it charts on.
What happens when the formula gives 5?
In the Luoshu square 5 sits in the center palace, which carries no trigram, so a 5 is borrowed: a male chart with 5 becomes Kun 2, a female chart with 5 becomes Gen 8, and the group follows the borrowed palace. 1986 gives a male chart 5, so Kun 2 and the West group; 1990 gives a female chart 5, so Gen 8 and the West group.
Can a man and a woman born in the same year share a trigram?
Only in a year whose single digit is 8: 11 minus 8 is 3, and 8 plus 4 is 12, which becomes 3 again once 9 is taken off, so both charts are Zhen 3. 1997 is such a year. In every other year the two formulas point at different palaces.
What decides the East or West group?
The Later-Heaven palace of the life trigram: Kan 1, Zhen 3, Xun 4 and Li 9 form the East group; Qian 6, Kun 2, Gen 8 and Dui 7 form the West group. The element and the Luoshu number ride along with the palace and draw no boundary of their own.
How are Sheng Qi and Tian Yi decided?
By the touring-star verse run on the life trigram: Fu Wei always sits in the life trigram's own palace and the other seven take one star each. The same-group four land on Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian and Fu Wei and the opposite four on Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha and Huo Hai. The result grid prints one star per palace and the favorable line lists the same stars with their directions.
Why do two people share the same four favorable directions?
Because the whole group shares them: every East group chart reads North, East, Southeast and South and every West group chart reads Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest. Within one group the touring star is what differs: due North is Fu Wei for a Kan 1 chart and Yan Nian for a Li 9 chart.
What comes after the life trigram is set?
The trigram fixes which directions read favorable for a person. Set the house line and its degrees with the Twenty-Four Mountains Luopan Calculator, the twenty-year cycle with the Feng Shui Nine Periods Lookup, the year and month stars with the Feng Shui Purple-White Stars Chart, and the birth moment itself with the BaZi Chart.
