Feng Shui Life and House Match

Enter a birth date, a gender and a facing degree for the life trigram, the house trigram and whether the two groups match.

AI read-out

After the chart is cast, the result page has an "AI read-out" with a ready-made prompt for the life-and-house match: the life trigram, the house trigram and the eight-palace comparison. Copy the full text and paste it into the LLM platform you usually use, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or DeepSeek.

What is Feng Shui Life and House Match and what is it used for?

The page takes three inputs: a Gregorian birth date, gender and the facing degree read on a compass. The result prints the two readouts side by side. The life trigram line gives its name, Luoshu number and element and whether the chart is East group or West group; the house trigram line gives its name, its sitting mountain and whether the house is an East-group or West-group house. The relation line then reads either life and house trigrams match or life and house trigrams do not match. A match adds a line of the directions favorable to both, and each of the eight palace cells carries both readings at once.

The two trigrams are cast separately and nothing else enters the judgement. The life trigram follows the birth year after the Start of Spring and the gender, the same formula as the Feng Shui Eight Mansions Chart page. The house trigram follows the sitting mountain, while the form asks for the facing one, because the line read at the door is the facing direction: a facing on Mao sits on You, You belongs to Dui, so the house is a Dui house. A man born 14 August 1985 casts Qian 6, the West group; a facing of 90 degrees is sitting You and facing Mao, a Dui house, also the West group, so the two groups agree and the reading is a match.

The verdict reads the grouping alone. The same birthday and the same Dui house cast as a woman give Li 9, the East group, and the reading is no match: the date and the house stay put and only gender turns the verdict. A life trigram borrowed onto another palace takes part on the same terms: a woman born 10 March 1990 borrows Gen 8, the West group, and that same sitting-You house reads a match.

The result grid runs south at the top and east on the left, the old orientation, and each of the eight palaces carries both readings under one of four notes: Both favorable for a palace that is a favorable direction of the life trigram and a favorable position of the house, Life side only and House side only for the two one-sided cases, and Both unfavorable where neither side reaches. The center cell takes no direction and holds the trigram of the house. When the two groups agree, four cells are favorable to both and four unfavorable to both; when they point in opposite directions, four cells read life side only and four house side only, with neither of the two-sided notes in sight.

The sitting mountain table below the form lists the three mountains and the house group of each trigram, so a compass reading can be looked up directly. A facing more than 4.5 degrees off the center of its mountain is a leaning line: the sentence names the mountains it leans toward, so 95.5 degrees prints as sitting You, facing Mao, leaning Xin and Yi, while the house trigram stays on the mountain itself. The substitute chart that a leaning line opens belongs to the Xuankong Flying Stars Chart page. The touring stars of the Eight Mansions school are not on this page, the twenty-year cycle is on the Feng Shui Nine Periods Lookup page, and the five-element pattern of a birth moment is on the BaZi Chart page. What this page gives is the two groupings read against each other and the direction notes that follow, not a reading of health, money or family.

Sitting Mountain Sets the House Trigram

A house takes its trigram from the sitting mountain: sitting north and facing south is a Kan house, sitting south and facing north is a Li house. Each trigram rules three mountains and 45°, the same grid as the twenty-four mountains degree table on the Feng Shui Compass page. Kan, Zhen, Xun and Li form the East-group houses and Qian, Kun, Gen and Dui form the West-group houses.

Trigram Sitting mountains Direction House group
Kan Ren, Zi, Gui North East-group house
Kun Wei, Kun, Shen Southwest West-group house
Zhen Jia, Mao, Yi East East-group house
Xun Chen, Xun, Si Southeast East-group house
Qian Xu, Qian, Hai Northwest West-group house
Dui Geng, You, Xin West West-group house
Gen Chou, Gen, Yin Northeast West-group house
Li Bing, Wu, Ding South East-group house

FAQ

How is the life and house match calculated?

The two trigrams are cast separately: the life trigram from the birth year after the Start of Spring and the gender, the house trigram from the trigram that rules the sitting mountain. Same group reads a match, opposite groups read no match, and this page carries no third verdict.

Does the house follow the sitting mountain or the facing one?

It follows the sitting mountain, while the form asks for the facing one, because the line read at the door is the facing direction. A facing on Mao sits on You and is a Dui house; a facing on You sits on Mao and is a Zhen house. 90 degrees and 270 degrees are two different houses.

When does a line count as leaning, and does it change the house?

A facing more than 4.5 degrees off the center of its mountain is a leaning line, and the sentence names the mountains it leans toward, so 95.5 degrees prints as sitting You, facing Mao, leaning Xin and Yi. The house trigram stays on the mountain itself and that reading is still a Dui house. The substitute chart a leaning line opens belongs to the Xuankong Flying Stars Chart page.

What does the Start of Spring boundary change here?

Two birthdays inside one calendar year can fall on two groups. Start of Spring 2001 falls on 4 February, so 20 January 2001 charts on 2000 and gives Li 9, the East group, while 20 February 2001 charts on 2001 and gives Gen 8, the West group. Against the same Li house sitting on Wu and facing Zi (0 degrees) the first reads a match and the second reads no match. For a borderline birthday the result page prints the ganzhi year beside the year it charts on.

Why do a man and a woman born in the same year get opposite verdicts?

The two formulas point at different palaces and often land on opposite groups: 14 August 1985 gives Qian 6 for a man and Li 9 for a woman, so one matches a Dui house and the other does not. The exception is the year where both formulas give the same trigram, and 1997 is such a year, Zhen 3 for both, so the two verdicts agree on any house.

Which cells are favorable to both?

They are the overlap of the four favorable directions of the life trigram and the four favorable positions of the house. When the groups agree the line is the favorable four of the life trigram: Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest for a West group chart on a West group house (a man born 14 August 1985 with a facing of 90 degrees), North, East, Southeast and South for an East group chart on an East group house (a man born 1 June 1987 with a facing of 0 degrees). When the groups oppose, the overlap is empty and the line is not printed.

Why does Kan rule Ren, Zi and Gui?

On the mountain ring Zi sits at 0 degrees, Wu at 180 degrees, and every cell is 15 degrees wide. The Later-Heaven palace puts Kan due North, and a trigram rules the 45 degrees centered on its own direction, so the Kan cells cross the 0 degree line and take Ren, Zi and Gui. Sitting on any of the three is a Kan house, and the ring is the same table as the twenty-four mountains degree grid on the Twenty-Four Mountains Luopan Calculator page.

What comes after the verdict?

Which palace a door or a bed falls on depends on the eight touring stars of the life trigram, on the Feng Shui Eight Mansions Chart page. The three flying star charts of the house are on Xuankong Flying Stars Chart, the twenty-year cycle on Feng Shui Nine Periods Lookup, and the five-element pattern of a birth moment on BaZi Chart.
