What is Feng Shui Purple-White Stars Chart and what is it used for?

The year and month Purple-White chart is the timing layer of Xuankong feng shui. Enter one solar date and the page draws two nine-palace grids: one for that year, one for that month. Each of the nine stars (1 White, 2 Black, 3 Jade, 4 Green, 5 Yellow, 6 White, 7 Red, 8 White, 9 Purple) is shown in its palace with its element and luck, and the other eight fly outward from whichever star sits in the center palace.

The main use is timing selection. Before moving, breaking ground, renovating, opening a business or signing, the grid for that year and month is checked: the sector where 5 Yellow or 2 Black lands is left quiet, while sectors reached by 4 Green or 9 Purple suit documents and celebrations. A month ruled by an auspicious star can itself be the month chosen.

It also covers annual setup. Year and month stars are the moving layer placed over a home natal chart. Without a natal chart the two grids still show which sector should stay still and which can be worked on in a given month; with one, they show which palace the year and month stars enter and how they combine with the mountain and facing stars. This page charts the year and month grids only.

Neither the year nor the month turns at Chinese New Year. Annual stars switch at Start of Spring; monthly stars follow solar-term months and change at the "jie" terms (Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects, Clear and Bright). The first month starts from one of three stars by year branch: 8 White for Rat, Horse, Rabbit and Rooster years, 5 Yellow for Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat years, 2 Black for Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Pig years. Months count forward, the stars fly backward. The result page prints the Start-of-Spring year pillar, the solar-term month pillar and the lunar date, so a borderline day is easy to check.

Worked annual example: 2026, a Bingwu year. Lower-cycle Period 9 began in 2024 (Jiachen) with 3 Jade in the center, and the star steps back one each year: Jiachen 3 Jade, Yisi 2 Black, Bingwu 1 White. So 2026 has 1 White in the center palace, which puts 9 Purple in the southeast, 5 Yellow due south, 2 Black in the northwest and 8 White due east.

Worked monthly example: in the same year, the Wu month (the fifth solar-term month, around June 2026) has 4 Green in the center, the star of study and paperwork. May 20, 2026 is still inside the Si month, whose center star is 5 Yellow, a stillness month. Two different answers for one "May" come from treating the calendar month as the solar-term month; the term boundary decides which center star applies.

Three Eras Nine Periods reference: Upper Era, Period 1 1864–1883, 2 1884–1903, 3 1904–1923; Middle Era, 4 1924–1943, 5 1944–1963, 6 1964–1983; Lower Era, 7 1984–2003, 8 2004–2023, 9 2024–2043. Each period lasts twenty years and Period 9 is ruled by 9 Purple. The system grows out of the Han-dynasty Luoshu nine-palace diagram and Tang calendar practice, was developed by the Xuankong school in the Ming and Qing, and was systematized in Shen Zhureng's Xuankong Studies. Year and month purple-white first served imperial timing selection, recorded in the Qing almanac Xieji Bianfang Shu, and reached households through popular almanacs.

FAQ

How is the monthly purple-white star calculated?

The first month's center star depends on the year's earthly-branch group: Rat/Horse/Rabbit/Rooster years start with 8 White, Dragon/Dog/Ox/Goat years with 5 Yellow, and Tiger/Monkey/Snake/Pig years with 2 Black; then count months forward while the stars fly backward.

How is the annual purple-white center star determined?

Using the Three Eras Nine Periods mnemonic: Upper Era Jiazi starts at 1 White, Middle Era at 4 Green, Lower Era at 7 Red, stepping back one star each year. For example, 2024 (Jiachen year, Lower Era Period 9) has 3 Jade at the center palace.

What does the "white" in purple-white mean?

The nine stars are 1 White, 2 Black, 3 Jade, 4 Green, 5 Yellow, 6 White, 7 Red, 8 White and 9 Purple; three of them are named "White" (1, 6 and 8), hence the collective name.

Are purple-white months based on the lunar or solar calendar?

Solar terms: the first month (Tiger month) begins at Start of Spring, and the boundaries fall on the "jie" terms (Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects, Clear and Bright), not on the lunar new moon.

Which stars are auspicious?

1 White, 6 White and 8 White are the three auspicious white stars, with 9 Purple next; 2 Black, 5 Yellow and 3 Jade are sickness/affliction stars to watch.

How is 5 Yellow remedied?

5 Yellow is an earth-element affliction star; the remedy rule is stillness. Renovation, digging and long sitting are avoided in the sector it reaches, and metal objects there (a wind chime, a brass gourd) drain the earth qi. In 2026 the sector is due south; day-by-day breaking-ground notes are on the Chinese Almanac page.

Is there a daily purple-white chart?

The method exists. Daily stars are counted in three segments marked by the first Jiazi day after Winter Solstice (starting 1 White), Rain Water (7 Red) and Grain Rain (4 Green), flying forward one day at a time. This page charts the year and month grids only.

Is purple-white the same as BaZi fortune telling?

No. Purple-white is a space-time system that scores directions and periods for activities like moving or renovating; the BaZi Chart page is a personal system reading the five-element pattern of a birth moment. They share the ganzhi calendar but serve different purposes.

Why is the first purple-white month not the first lunar month?

Purple-white months follow solar terms: Start of Spring to Awakening of Insects is month 1 (Tiger month), Awakening of Insects to Clear and Bright is month 2, and so on. Lunar months begin at the new moon, so the two can differ by up to about half a month.

How are the charts combined with a home natal chart?

The home natal flying star chart is set up first (from its construction period), then the annual and monthly stars are overlaid: the palace of the natal chart each star flies into, and its combination with the natal mountain and facing stars, decide that sector for the year.
